Volunteers
Volunteers are the heart of hospice. They are an integral part of our
interdisciplinary team and play a key role in providing care.
Hospice of Charleston was started by volunteers, and our
future depends on the commitment and support from generous people in the
community. Our structured volunteer training program prepares you to work
directly with patients
and their families, participate in community programs, or assist with
office projects or special events.
Here are some of the many ways our
volunteers help out:
For the patient and family:
-
Providing companionship for the patient and/or
family members.
-
Sitting with the patient to provide relief for the
caregiver.
-
Running errands for the patient, such as going to
the post office, grocery store, etc.
-
Helping with child care.
-
Reading to the patient.
-
Writing letters for the patient.
-
Assisting with meal preparation.
-
Being a good listener to the patient or family
members as they share their worries, fears, memories and hopes.
-
Providing emotional support to family members
following the death of their loved one.
-
Help with baking goodies like cakes and cookies.
-
Assist with yard work.
In the office and community:
-
Writing thank you cards for donations received.
-
Assisting with bulk mailings of newsletters to
supporters, volunteers and physicians.
-
Providing clerical support.
-
Helping with bereavement mailings and phone calls.
-
Assisting with preparation of Hospice-sponsored
programs such as our volunteer training program, bereavement
programs and special events.
-
Speaking to church groups and civic clubs about
hospice care.
-
Participating at health fairs and other community
events where Hospice of Charleston is represented.
