Why a Hospice Center?
 |
Hospice Center of Charleston
|
For whatever the reason, families can rest assured that at the Hospice Center of Charleston, their loved ones will receive the best comfort care in a home-like environment with the expertise of Hospice of Charleston staff and trained volunteers.
Pain and Symptom Management
Sometimes the progression of the disease causes an increase in pain or symptoms that become difficult to treat in the home. Patients can be admitted to the Hospice Center to provide optimal control of the pain and/or other symptoms.
Caregiver Crisis
This encompasses many different scenarios: from the patient who chooses to live alone throughout the process of their serious illness, to the patient with no family or friends who can care for them throughout the last stages of life's journey and have no place to go. The Hospice Center is also ideal when the caregiver is sick or elderly and physically is unable to care for the patient in the home.
Patients Wishes
Hospice of Charleston honors the last wishes of patients and their families. For some, this is the desire to not die in the home. The Hospice Center is ideally suited for admitting the patient during his/her last days to finish their life's journey.
Respite Care
The Hospice Center of Charleston will also admit patients for up to a five-day respite period. Hospice of Charleston recognizes the needs of both patients and families, which can mean allowing caregivers a much-needed break and an opportunity to care for themselves, preventing burnout. This feature also may be utilized if the family needs to attend an event out of town.

Hospice Center Campaign Goes Public
On February 10 Hospice of Charleston went public with the $3 million campaign to build a Hospice Center. After achieving $1.5 million, the halfway point, the board and campaign cabinet decided to invite the community-at-large to join this worthy effort. A great 'splash' was made that week with a front-page article in the Post and Courier and two spots on NBC Channel 2 to discuss the Hospice Center. Additionally, the campaign cabinet met that evening to celebrate success and plan steps to achieve the rest of the goal.
Currently, the campaign is more than $3.1 million! Included in the totals is a $250,000 gift from the Query family to go towards the chapel in the Center. With the campaign showing such success, Hospice of Charleston is making steps toward the construction of the facility. In February, Hill Construction was hired to build the dream designed by architects Stubbs, Muldrow and Herin.
Ultimately, all progress is solely thanks to many of you. Your tremendous generosity is the only reason the construction of the center is possible. We will continue to keep you updated throughout the campaign and the construction progress.
